The airline has informed all affected guests about their service recovery options.

AirAsia X (AAX), the Malaysian airline, will halt its flights on the Kuala Lumpur–Nairobi route starting September 1, 2025. The airline cited lower-than-anticipated travel demand as the primary reason for the suspension in a recent announcement.

"Effective September 1, 2025, AirAsia X (flight code D7) will suspend flights between Kuala Lumpur and Nairobi as part of its network optimization initiative in response to lower demand," the statement read.

The airline has informed all affected guests about their service recovery options for bookings impacted by the route change.

The airline stated, "We have promptly informed all affected passengers about the available service recovery options (SROs) for bookings on AAX for travel from September 1, 2025, onwards."

The service recovery options offered include a full refund, a credit account, or a complimentary flight change (for travel before August 31, 2025) to assist guests in making alternative travel plans.

Passengers can also use Bo for assistance in accessing these options.

The airline also mentioned that it will continue to assess its network and customer demand, making adjustments as necessary to maintain profitability and offer the best value fares.

The decision to suspend flights to Nairobi follows less than a year after the route was introduced.

AirAsia X launched its direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to Nairobi on November 15, 2024, marking the airline's debut in the East Africa region.

The Nairobi route was intended to serve as an essential link between Asia and Africa, promoting trade, tourism, and business connections within the region.

By providing direct air travel between Kuala Lumpur and Nairobi, the airline aimed to boost accessibility and stimulate economic opportunities for both nations.

"Venturing into Africa is an exciting milestone for us, especially considering our strong growth earlier this year," the airline remarked.

"We expect to carry over 156,000 passengers annually on this route, which will enhance connections and support the growth of the tourism sectors in both Malaysia and Kenya," said Benyamin Ismail, CEO of AirAsia X, during the flight launch.

The AAX flight to Nairobi was also introduced to provide a smooth Fly-Thru connection, establishing a vital link between Kenya and 130 destinations across Southeast Asia, Northern and Central Asia, and Australia.

This move was aimed at offering affordable and convenient travel options while reinforcing the airline's commitment to global connectivity.

At present, the route operates four times a week and remains the sole direct air link between Malaysia and Africa.
